Goodest Cat Food Review

The company behind popular Philippine household brands such as Century Tuna and 555 Sardines is expanding to the pet food industry with Goodest.

But “firsts” are notoriously bad. Is Goodest bad, too? Or is Goodest good for cats?

We’ll answer these questions in our Goodest Cat review below.

Goodest as a brand

General Odyssey Inc. is the company behind Goodest. It’s a subsidiary of Century Pacific Food Inc., the maker of famous canned food brands such as Century Tuna and 555 Sardines.

Goodest company logo

The brand name combines “good” and “best,” promising to offer only the best food for our cats. Century Pacific’s first venture into the pet food market is with Goodest. They already manufacture canned fish products, so they feel going into the cat food business makes excellent sense.

Where is Goodest manufactured?

General Tuna Corporation (GTC)–the export arm of Century Pacific Food Inc.–manufactures Goodest. GTC was initially located in Taguig City, Metro Manila, but transferred to General Santos City in 1999. The main reason for the transfer is to be closer to the Western Pacific Ocean, where the main ingredients are sourced. GTC is now the largest tuna canning facility in the country.

The initial 3 Goodest products have been co-developed by Filipino veterinarians and reviewed and approved by the Philippine Bureau of Animal Industry.

What kinds of cat food does Goodest offer?

Goodest sells 85-gram wet cat food pouches in three variants: Chicken Chomp, Tender Tuna, and Meaty Mackerel. It now has a new Goodest Tender Tuna in a 400-gram can.

Guaranteed Analysis

The guaranteed analysis is listed on the original packaging of Goodest Tender Tuna. All guaranteed analysis labels should include the minimum crude protein, minimum crude fat, maximum crude fiber, and maximum moisture content.

NutrientContent
Crude Protein (min)≥7.00%
Crude Fat (min)≥2.00%
Crude Fiber (max)≤1.00%

Table 3: Goodest Tender Tuna’s Guaranteed Analysis

“Crude” is the analytical method that determines protein, fat, and fiber. For example, to get the crude protein, the amount of nitrogen is analyzed and then multiplied by 6.25.

Checking the guaranteed analysis is the incorrect way of comparing it against the cat food nutrient requirements by AAFCO. It needs to be converted to a dry matter basis.

Ingredient quality: ★★★★★(4.6 of 5.0 stars)

The Goodest Tender Tuna scored 4.6 stars in ingredient quality because all its ingredients are human-grade.  It lost a few points because of gelling agents.

We also deducted more points for the unnecessary addition of coloring agents.

Nutritional balance: ★★★★★(4.8 of 5.0 stars)

The Goodest Tender Tuna scored 4.8 stars in nutritional balance because it meets AAFCO’s minimum nutrient requirements for both adult maintenance and growth and reproduction and is rich in moisture.

You can buy Goodest from their official stores in Shopee or Lazada. It’s also available in Pet Warehouse, Robinson’s Supermarket, Puregold, Waltermart, and most pet stores of all sizes.

Goodest earned a perfect 5-star rating in availability because of how widely obtainable it is.

Overall, is Goodest good for cats?

Short answer: Yes, Goodest is good for cats. Scratch that. It’s excellent!

The long answer:

We rate Philippine cat food brands by ingredient quality, nutritional balance, product variety, price, and availability.

Ingredient quality: ★★★★★(4.4 of 5.0 stars)

Goodest scored 4.4 stars in ingredient quality as a brand. It’s the average of the 3 variants’ scores. Most of the main ingredients are human-grade except for chicken by-products in the Chicken Chomp and Meaty Mackerel. They’ve lost some points for not specifying their gelling agents and for adding sugar (in Chicken Chomp only) and coloring agents.

Nutritional balance: ★★★★★(4.8 of 5.0 stars)

Goodest scored the same overall as its products–4.8 stars–in nutritional balance as a brand because they all have the same guaranteed analysis. Thus, the same dry matter basis. It scored 4.8 stars because AAFCO’s nutrient requirements are met for all stages, and it’s rich in moisture. It lost some points because of its high carbohydrate content. However, compared to dry food from other brands, the carbohydrate content is significantly lower.

Product variety: ★★★★★(4.0 of 5.0 stars)

Goodest scored 4.0 stars in product variety as a brand. Its products are suitable for all life stages, so it’s easy to manage multicat households. The different variants also offer different meat options, so if your cat is allergic to a particular meat, there are other options. Goodest lost a star in product variety because it only offers wet food. If your cat prefers dry, they don’t have any to offer.

Price: ★★★★★(3.0 of 5.0 stars)

Goodest scored the same overall as its products, 3.0 stars in price because they’re all priced similarly. The suggested retail price is ₱26.00 for a single pack, meaning it’s ₱0.31 per gram. So a normal-size (3kg), neutered adult Puspin needs a food budget of around ₱1,860.00 monthly.

Availability: ★★★★★(5.0 of 5.0 stars)

Goodest scored 5.0 stars in availability as a brand. It’s widely available nationwide, from pet stores of all sizes to big supermarkets like Puregold and Robinson’s Supermarket.

Goodest’s overall rating: ★★★★★(4.1 of 5.0 stars)

Giving equal weights to each of the criteria above (~20%), the Goodest earns a score of 4.1 stars as a brand.

Final thoughts

It fills us with pride that we can confidently recommend a Filipino cat food brand…

Goodest is excellent! It’s perfect for almost all households with cats of any age. AAFCO’s nutrient requirements are met with flying colors, and they’re rich in moisture which will help your cat reach their recommended water intake.

Goodest is highly accessible too. Order from your nearest pet store, or buy them with your groceries at Robinson’s Supermarket.

The price is not the best; it’s also not the worst. But you can get away with feeding your cat with just Goodest. So you could potentially save money because you don’t need to buy dry food. You can offer the other two variants if your cat gets bored with one variant.

Our only reservation in recommending Goodest is if your cat has special dietary needs. For special needs cats, best to follow your vet’s cat food recommendation.

Overall, we’re delighted that Century Pacific has expanded to the pet food business. We’re excited about what other cat food they’ll be offering. If anyone from the Goodest team comes across this page, we’d love Goodest more if there’s less carbohydrate content, no added sugar, and colorings, lower price (if possible), and offer just as nutritious dry food and treat options, please.
