POWERCAT Kitten Review: Best Dry Cat Food for Kittens (2022)

Our best kitten dry food choice is the POWERCAT Kitten Formula Dry Food. It’s what we fed the resident cats in Urban Cats Philippines HQ when they were kittens, and they loved it.

BUT…

As much as we love POWERCAT, two things could be a deal-breaker for you. Read our POWERCAT Kitten Review all the way through to find out what they are.

A Quick Background on POWERCAT

POWERCAT is a Malaysian brand by Adabi Consumer Industries. Because Malaysia is predominantly Muslim, POWERCAT offers halal cat food. Being halal means that POWERCAT sources the animals they use to make their cat food humanely. They also don’t add preservatives or artificial flavorings.

They sell cat food for all ages, cat litter, cat shampoo, cat hair detangler, cat hair mist, air deodorizer, and surface sanitizers.

Today, we’ll be focusing on their dry food for kittens.

POWERCAT Kitten Formula Dry Cat Food: Up Close and Personal

Let’s discuss the POWERCAT kitten food’s ingredients, nutritional value, packaging, and price.

Here’s the list of the POWERCAT Kitten ingredients:

  • Corn
  • Soybean Meal
  • Corn Gluten Meal
  • Chicken Oil
  • Fish Meal
  • Fish Oil
  • Tuna Flavor
  • Vitamins and Minerals

And no preservatives, artificial coloring, or salt were added to the ingredients.

Nutritional Value

Here’s the guaranteed nutritional value of the POWERCAT Kitten Formula compared to other popular cat food brands in the Philippines:

POWERCAT Kitten Dry Food vs Royal Canin Mother & Babycat Dry Cat Food
vs Whiskas Dry Food Kitten with Ocean Fish and Milk vs Purina Friskies Kitten Discoveries

a. Protein

POWERCAT has the highest amount of minimum protein tied with Purina. But POWERCAT doesn’t add any salt, unlike Purina, which lists “Iodized salt” as one of its ingredients.

b. Fat

Royal Canin has almost double the amount of minimum guaranteed fat compared to the other brands. But is PHP 1,115 for a 4kg bag (~PHP 278.75/kg) worth it? We don’t think so.

c. Fiber

While fiber is essential for your kittens’ overall gastrointestinal health and can help overweight cats lose weight, experts recommend less than 10% fiber in every meal.

d. Moisture

Although Whiskas and Purina have the highest moisture content, it doesn’t mean they’re better. Generally, dry cat food should only contain 6-10% moisture. If you’re worried that your kittens’ water intake is low, you can get more moisture from wet food.

Packaging and Price

The POWERCAT Premium Kitten Food is sold in the following sized bag:

  • 420g – PHP 145 (~PHP 345.24/kg) Update: Pet Warehouse stopped carrying 420g bags in their store.
  • 1.2kg – PHP 305 (~PHP 254.17/kg)
  • 7kg – PHP 1,540 (~PHP 220/kg)

(Prices from Pet Warehouse.)

Tip #1: You can find pet stores in Facebook Marketplace repacking the cat food in 1kg bags for as low as PHP 210. So if you don’t mind not getting the original packaging, you can support your local pet store by buying a repacked bag. You save money too. Win-win!

Tip #2: Be wary of ordering by bulk in Shopee and Lazada because shipping costs can creep up. Find a nearby pet store by walking around your area or searching on Facebook Marketplace.

POWERCAT Kitten Review: The Pros and Cons

Here are the things we like and don’t like about the POWERCAT kitten food.

What we like:

Kitten owners don’t have to choose between quality or value regarding cat food. POWERCAT is offering us both, and we love them for it.

What we don’t like:

a. Primary ingredients aren’t meat

POWERCAT Kitten Food’s primary ingredients aren’t meat; it’s corn, soybean meal, and corn gluten meal.

Cats are carnivores (eat meat only). So in the perfect world, we want the primary ingredients to be meat like fish or chicken – not corn and soybean, which are plants.

But meat is more expensive than corn.

So unless you can afford premium brands such as Orijen, Nature’s Protection, and Oasy, kittens’ nutrients are derived from corn and the other ingredients listed.

b. Not widely available

Unlike brands like Whiskas and Purina, you won’t find POWERCAT in your local grocery store. Even in veterinary clinics and pet shops in malls, you’ll likely find Royal Canin and Orijen but not POWERCAT.

So this means saving up extra money for the shipping cost if you can’t find a pet shop near your home that sells it.

We have also never seen the 420g bag sold anywhere. We bought 1.2kg bags from Shopee or Dog City (via Grab Shop) or repacked 1kg from a nearby pet store.

Upon writing updating this review, Pet Warehouse doesn’t stock 420g bags anymore. The 7kg bag is also out-of-stock; only the 7kg bag is available. Readers from Metro Manila can make the most of their free shipping offer.

The Verdict

We highly recommend you try out POWERCAT’s dry food for kittens. Our babies in Urban Cats PH love it.

But start with a small repacked bag before buying a big bag.
